Bedtime Baseball: Phillies-Reds Game 3
As a public service for young readers, the Journal presents Baseball Past Your Bedtime, a summary of Major League Baseball playoff games that end late at night. This is a synopsis for Sunday night’s Game 3 between the Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds:
Hey kids, hope you’re getting Monday off from school for the Columbus Day. If you’re not, tell mom or dad to “pull a Bobby Cox or a Ron Gardenhire” at the next school board meeting and demand you get the holiday off. That technique almost always works and is funny to watch.
You’re probably exhausted from all the late-night baseball this weekend. There are more episodes of this stuff than “The Wizards of Waverly Place.” But Sunday night’s game between the Phillies and the Reds was an important one, even if it had a lot of errors by the Reds and a lot of – ugh – pitching. What’s with all the pitching in these playoffs, anyway? Grandpa loves to talk about “classic baseball” and “good pitching always beats good hitting,” but what he’s really saying is “I don’t like home runs, because I’m really old and I like being bored and watching boring things on TV, like golf and the news.”
You really didn’t miss much if you fell asleep early Sunday night. The Phillies got a run in the first inning and that’s all they needed to win. Philadelphia pitcher Cole Hamels was so good, he turned around in the seventh inning and his entire team was sound asleep. Second baseman Chase Utley dreamed he was a horse chasing after a wizard. Jimmy Rollins dreamed he was a wizard being chased by Chase Utley. Ryan Howard had a nightmare he appeared as himself in an episode of “Entourage.” Charlie Manuel dreamed that people thought he was half as big a genius as Tony LaRussa or Joe Maddon.
When the Phillies woke up, Hamels was still pitching, the Reds were down to their last at-bat, and grandpa was fast asleep on his couch. Reds manager Dusty Baker – yes, that’s really his name, Dusty Baker – walked over to Mr. Manuel and proposed that the last out be “double or nothing.” Mr. Manuel refused, but he did offer to take the Reds to the aquarium after the game. So that’s exactly what happened – the Phillies won 2-0, took the series from the Reds, and after the game everyone went to the Newport Aquarium to look at the frog bog, jellyfish gallery and the Kingdom of Penguins. Everyone had a great time, even if the Reds dropped two frogs and one penguin (all of them were unhurt.)

Game Time:
Texas Rangers at Tampa Bay Rays
Tuesday, 8:05 pm Eastern – TBS
The Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays play game five of the baseball ALDS on Tuesday with the winner advancing to the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees. It is rematch of Game 1 between Texas’ Cliff Lee and Tampa Bay’s David Price.
The Rays are -115 with a total of 6.5 at SBG Global.
Cliff Lee is 5-0 in the postseason and has been simply brilliant the last two years but the Rangers are still underdogs on Tuesday against the Rays and David Price. This has been a road team series as all four games have been won by the road team and the underdog. The Rays will try and break that streak with 19-game winner Price on the mound. Price said that he didn’t have his best stuff in Game 1 and that he expects a different result on Tuesday.
The Rangers have to deal with a lot of history as they approach Game 5. They have never won a baseball playoff series. Even with Cliff Lee on the mound, the Rangers have to overcome the weight of failure in this game. They also have to find some offense. Suddenly the Rangers can’t score as Josh Hamilton looks injured, Vladimir Guerrero looks old and the entire lineup looks scared.
There has never been a five-game series where the road team has won every game. The Rays look alive with Carlos Pena and Evan Longoria hitting the ball. Tampa has David Price well rested and they now have momentum for Tuesday’s game.
Here are the baseball betting statsfor Tuesday’s game. The Rangers are 5-0 in their last 5 road games. The Rangers are 5-0 in their last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Rangers are 4-1 in Lee’s last 5 starts. The Rangers are 5-13 in the last 18 meetings in Tampa Bay.
The Rays are 2-5 in their last 7 playoff games. The Rays are 1-5 in their last 6 games as a home favorite. The Rays are 0-5 in their last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Rays are 4-1 in Price’s last 5 starts as a home favorite.
The Under is 4-0 in the Rangers last 4 playoff road games. The Under is 4-1 in Lee’s last 5 starts overall. The Under is 6-0 in Rays last 6 playoff home games. The Under is 18-6-2 in Price’s last 26 starts as a home favorite.

The Basics Of Golf Games
The Basics Of Golf Games
If your friends or coworkers are tormenting you take the time and Learn How To Play Golf or maybe it’s just something you’ve always wanted to learn. No matter the reason before you rush off to your local pro golf store and buy the fanciest looking clubs you can find, slow down and take the time to understand the basics.
Your safety as well as that of others will be the most important. Many people don’t think of golf is a dangerous sport, since it does not appear to be contact sports. However, there are still safety issues that must be considered at all times while playing. You must be aware of where all players are at all times. If somebody steps in front of your playing space, while the ball is in motion, make sure to yell “Fore” so they are aware that the ball is coming their way and they can quickly stepped out of harms way.
You and your fellow players can opt to play on a private course or a public one. There will be rules and required etiquette posted on the public course, so take the time to learn each of these rules. The main concept of golf is to direct your ball into the hole with as few swings of your golf club as possible. The number of swings of each player will be recorded, and at the end whoever has gotten the ball in the hole with the fewest number of swings will be declared the winner.
Take the time to get acquainted with your golf course and get a feel for what it’s like to hold your golf club. There are different techniques you can use to swing your club to help you get your ball where it needs to be. How you grip your golf club is very important. A few known ways to do this are: the interlocking grip, which has your left index finger aligned with your right little finger, the overlapping grip, which is accomplished by having your little finger fit on top of your index finger of the opposite hand, or the baseball grip that has you holding your club like a baseball bat.
If you’re not ready to face a real golf course yet, you might want to consider purchasing golf training software, which can offer you educational information regarding beginner basics. As you begin to feel that you have started to improve. You might also want to consider software that will point out mistakes you make as you play and offer you suggestions on how to correct and improve your game.
Once you feel ready to buy your first set of golf clubs it’s a good idea to go to a store specializing in golf clubs as they will be able to offer you the best information and advice on what you should buy. Clubs can be expensive, however in many professional shops you can buy secondhand clubs.
If you’re still uncertain about your ability when playing, don’t hesitate to ask other players for advice. They’ll understand you’re a beginner just learning. Like with many sports there are various ways in which you can play the game. However, it’s really important to keep in mind to learn the basic rules of the sport first.

Train Like A Martial Artist To Improve Your Golf Game
One of the fastest growing segments of the golf industry is golf fitness. Golfers are now bombarded with a variety of fitness programs that will allow them to improve their golf games. Most of these programs tout so-called golf-specific exercises. While many of them will help increase range of motion in the long run and help the golfer to add a little strength, that is pretty much where they end.
If you truly want to improve your golf game in the long run, you need to train like an athlete. This does not mean you need to train like a professional or Olympic athlete, or even like Tiger Woods and Camillo Villegas. However, you do need to train your entire body, because simply training one body part to improve a weakness may result in a weakness developing elsewhere.
Here are a few steps to take to get started. First, have a physical assessment done. You can do this done by a physical therapist or personal trainer who is knowledgeable of golf swing mechanics and biomechanics, or do this at home. A physical assessment will identify the weaknesses in your body that may be holding back your golf game.
For instance, if you have a reverse pivot type of golf swing where you find it difficult to lift your arms, you will tilt your spine toward the target as a way of compensating for your inability to lift the arms by themselves. This is a lack of flexibility and strength in the shoulders, but more so in the smaller muscles of the shoulder. The reverse pivot may also be attributed to an inability to turn the hips properly, and instead you tilt them in the backswing, rather than turn them.
You can do a complete physical assessment to determine your strengths and weaknesses. Then, the next step is to develop a
This is what I find lacking in most golf fitness programs. Most will not help you improve your overall fitness, because most of these programs do not have SIGNIFICANT strength and flexibility exercises included. Why? Because these programs assume that most golfers are either lazy, or just too busy to worry about their overall fitness. The focus of these programs is simply to give the golfer a quick fix, because, unfortunately, that is what most golf instruction attempts to do as well. As a result, most of them have you training with some tubing, balance balls, medicine balls, and maybe some light dumbbells, and that is it. Most of the routines will hardly have you break a sweat.
If you are a lazy golfer looking for a quick fix, then stop reading now. But, if you realize that improving your game takes some effort, then, you must also agree that improving your fitness requires some effort as well, and you should keep reading. However, don’t be discouraged. You can significantly improve your fitness, your strength, your flexibility and even your cardio fitness, in 30 to 45 minutes per day. Furthermore, you can accomplish all of this at home. So, you save time and money by not driving to and from the gym, and spending money on a personal trainer.
You may ask how this is possible? The answer is with martial arts and yoga related training and exercise. People who study the martial arts and yoga find out almost immediately how beneficial they are to their fitness. While these programs have been utilized in eastern cultures for centuries, they are just now catching on in the West. Their benefits are many, yet there is no need to go to a gym and no need to buy expensive equipment.
There are also many parallels between excelling in the martial arts and excelling golf. Both require strength, flexibility, mental toughness, and the ability to focus and relax. The techniques in the martial arts and yoga will help you train like an athlete, not as a lazy golfer. So go and learn a bit of both now to improve your golf game and your overall health and fitness!
